About the Position
OPEN DOORS is an arts-and-justice initiative that invests in the creativity and leadership of Black and brown people who use wheelchairs. Our work centers disability justice, community building, and gun-violence prevention, using art as a tool for advocacy and change.
We are guided by the vision and lived experience of the Reality Poets—an artist collective of current and former residents of Coler Rehabilitative and Nursing Care Center on Roosevelt Island. The Community Organizer will work closely with the Reality Poets and community partners to keep projects moving, events running, and relationships strong.
The Community Organizer will support ongoing work across the organization—from a campaign for better food at Coler to the OPEN DOORS podcast. They will facilitate team meetings, run open mics, follow up with partners, and help plan major projects like the 10-Year Gala and a new theater production premiering this fall.
The ideal candidate is highly organized and dependable, warm and observant, and able to meet people where they are. They keep things on track while staying grounded in the relationships at the center of the work.
