Disability Justice & Arts Organizer (DJA)
Reports to: OPEN DOORS Director
Status: Part-time (18–20 hours/week)
Compensation: $30–$35/hour, depending on experience
Benefits: Paid holidays and accrued sick time; flexible scheduling outside of required meetings and events; opportunities for professional growth, artistic collaboration, and leadership development. While this part-time position does not include health insurance, we anticipate continued growth in the organization and hope this role may expand in scope, hours, and benefits over time.
Location: Must live in the New York City area

About the Position
The Disability Justice & Arts Organizer (DJA) works closely with the Reality Poets and community partners to keep projects moving, events running, and relationships strong. The DJA supports ongoing work across the organization—from a campaign for better food at Coler to the OPEN DOORS podcast. They facilitate team meetings, run open mics, follow up with partners, and help coordinate major projects including our 10-Year Gala and a new theater production premiering this fall. The ideal candidate is highly organized and dependable, warm and observant, and able to meet people where they are.

12:00–1:00 PM — Week Ahead (Remote)
2:00–3:30 PM — Workshop (Remote)
Tuesday
2:00–3:30 PM — Council (Remote)
Thursday
2:00–3:30 PM — Podcast Recording (In Person, Bi-Weekly)
Friday
12:00–1:30 PM — NHLM Meeting (Remote)
Additional hours completed at your convenience. Must be available to participate in occasional OPEN DOORS special events.
Responsibilities
Coordinate and support events, including open mics, cookouts, and the 10-Year Gala
Attend workshops, Council, and team meetings; help facilitate discussions and keep projects moving
Work directly with Reality Poets to support their creative and professional work, including organizing materials, troubleshooting technology, and following up on individual needs
Build and maintain relationships with community partners and funders; attend events and represent OPEN DOORS in the community
Manage day-to-day logistics, including scheduling, calendar invitations, event invitations, attendance tracking, note-taking, and file organization
Communicate clearly and consistently with artists, partners, and team members via email, phone, and in person
Support the OPEN DOORS podcast by scheduling guests, setting up and operating cameras, microphones, and lighting, transferring recordings, and coordinating with editors
Create and post social media content in collaboration with the team and Reality Poets
Qualifications
Comfortable working directly with disabled artists and community partners
Strong interpersonal and communication skills in both written and face-to-face settings
Confident facilitating conversations and speaking in groups
Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Self-directed and dependable, with strong follow-through
Flexible and responsive when plans change
Familiarity with social media platforms and basic design tools
Comfortable with basic audio/video recording equipment and digital file management
Expectations
Participate actively in meetings and keep your camera on during Zoom meetings whenever possible
Arrive on time and communicate proactively about delays or schedule conflicts
Remain responsive to email and team communications
Approach the work with respect, professionalism, and a commitment to disability justice and community-centered collaboration
